Do you have a teen driver? If you know, I'm just curious why it is so high in your area?

Your self directed travel sounds terrific. The food, the wine, the gelato and the wonderful, kind locals all conspire to make the trip memorable. If language is a barrier you can always join an established tour for a fee. I suggest you start watching exchange rates [Dollars to Euros] . You can always use your ATM card to access local currency but there are lots of fees over and above exchange rates. It takes some research to isolate the less expensive options.

Snafu-I will definitely take a look at the American auto coverage and see how/if it will apply in Italy. Good call on the tour guides! I will make contact with a few so that I have their info on hand and know their availability if I decide to use one.
